Even after pointing a finger and making fun at their own long hiatus between albums, The Avalanches are a part of a small group of musicians who utilize the long awaited time to turn around another excellent album. 'Wildflower' was released in October 2016 giving a span of nearly 16 years since 'Since I Left You' their debut album. The Avalanches originally started around 1997 in Australia, throwing caution to the wind by implementing electronic, hip hop, ambient, world and psychedelic cross beats.
'Because I'm Me' shows best exactly where the cover art for 'Wildflower' represents. For instance the cover art for 'Wildflower' is a nod towards Sly and the Family Stone, ideally 'Because I'm Me' beautifully accepts the proposal to use the influence of an age and time where psychedelic and hip hop stood against the obstacles of the day.
The music video for 'Because I'm Me' shows a young boy trying to impress the young woman behind the ticket booth at a train/subway station. With a little help from some musicians, a microphone, recorded back beats and some break dance moves...the boy has little effect over the young woman. Even when the end pops up a gigantic inflatable heart (in the shape of the organ not a paper cut out heart) then ends up being met with sarcasm from the young woman. Isn't all young love/crushes typically the same, one way or another we are buffed or refused even as our best attitude is set forth. Trying to show how much we care, even a song written by The Avalanches could not impress this young woman.
After finding out that The Avalanches released a new album, it would only be in due time to witness which direction the group had spun towards. Especially since only two of the original members remain. It is not only safe to say but to imply that the new route/direction was possibly the perfect move.
